Phlebotomy service for Wirral West starting 3 April 2017

Issue 13 - Mar 2017

Dear Colleagues.  Regarding the new phlebotomy service for Wirral West starting 3 April 2017, we are delighted to tell you about a new NHS phlebotomy service in West Wirral from Wirral Community NHS Foundation Trust.

You will recall the changes within the community phlebotomy services that initially led to a great deal of dissatisfaction at the changes required by the CCG. Careful monitoring of the outcome has now allowed the trust to have a reliable analysis of visits to the three hubs and allowed us to redistribute our resources and provide a service in West Wirral within The Concourse in West Kirby that has excellent transport links and access.

All patients, from participating practices, in Wirral will be able to access the service by appointment, by calling our central booking line 0151 514 2222. The service will begin on Monday 3 April 2017 and is already receiving bookings in advance of the launch.

Though the changes in the phlebotomy service were felt by some to be poorly conceived, it is a model used successfully in other parts of the region and country. The initial dissatisfaction has now moved to a blossoming of statements of very positive patient experience in terms of access and convenience. In addition, we have increased availability of home visits and improved safety, plus better access to children’s blood tests as there is far less lone working by phlebotomists at the first three hubs.

The development of this new service is the result of rapid analysis of real-time data of resource use and the agility, with willingness, of our teams to respond to the wishes of patients, sustainably.

Yours sincerely
