Are you ready to ESCAPE knee pain?

Are you ready to ESCAPE knee pain?

Osteoarthritis is a long-term condition and can't be cured, but it doesn't necessarily get any worse over time and it can sometimes gradually improve.

Symptoms can be managed by regular exercise, making sure you're a healthy weight (if you are overweight), and wearing suitable footwear. More severe symptoms may need additional treatments such as painkillers and a structured exercise plan carried out under the supervision of a physiotherapist.

Wirral Community NHS Trust has recently launched its ESCAPE Knee Pain programme which offers structured exercise and advice classes for people with osteoarthritis who are aged 50+ and have been suffering from the condition for over six months. Running twice weekly for five weeks, the programme includes a full knee assessment, 10 gym sessions, goals setting, advice on self-management and support.

The ESCAPE programme has run successfully at other NHS Trusts with patients benefiting from a safe and structured exercise programme. Amanda Johnson, Senior Physiotherapist at Victoria Central Health Centre said, "We are excited to be offering this programme to our patients in Wirral who will benefit from improved strength, endurance, flexibility, balance and coordination. The classes provide a great environment for individuals to stay motivated and enjoy peer support. People learn good habits around basic physical activity and discover that with some simple changes they can experience long term benefits".

If you suffer with osteoarthritis and want to ESCAPE your knee pain, visit your GP and ask to be seen by Wirral Community NHS Trust. Classes are held on Wednesdays and Fridays at Victoria Central Health Centre from 10am-11.30am.
