Health Matters: 5 ways to beat anxiety & stress

Supporting Mental Health Awareness Week (12 -18 May)

"Looking after your mental health is really important to help get the most out of life and to cope when times are tough". Rachel Byron, Psychological Wellbeing Co-ordinator at Wirral Community NHS Trust

Some mental illnesses, such as depression and anxiety, are common. We all experience anxiety, stress and worry at times, particularly if we are going through a difficult period in our lives, and if anxiety goes on for too long or is too intense, it can start to affect everything we do.

We experience anxiety in many different ways. It can be through our thoughts, constantly worrying and imagining the worst. Our feelings are affected and we can feel tense, on edge, nervous, panicky, stressed, worried or detached. There can be changes to our body and we may experience a racing heart, trembling, tense muscles, and strange aches and pains. Our behaviour can also change, for example no appetite, poor sleep, irritable and wanting to avoiding certain situations.

What's important is to remember that there are things you can do to help relieve the symptoms of anxiety. By taking part in different activities, learning relaxation techniques, and eating healthier you can help boost your mood and improve your overall emotional and physical wellbeing.

We're supporting Mental Health Awareness Week by offering courses and activities to help manage stress and anxiety.

With arts and music based sessions, relaxation, Tai Chi, 'how to get a better night's sleep' sessions, chairbased aerobics, circuit training, health walks, men only football, people can build their confidence, boost their mood and relax in lots of different ways... there's something for everyone!

The Livewell team can also offer more support with making lifestyle changes by getting a FREE health and wellbeing assessment and personalised action plan from a health trainer.

On Friday 16 May, 10.00am - 2.00pm, the Livewell team will be in Asda, Birkenhead. They'll be there to chat to anyone who wants any advice on anxiety and stress. They'll be able to offer advice and provide information on the range of activities you can do to boost your mood or relax.

There is also a FREE course called 'Moving Forward' which provides help on managing stress and anxiety. The course runs for 1.5 hours every Thursday morning for four weeks starting on Thursday 15 May.

For more information about the course or any of the health and wellbeing sessions call 0151 630 8383 or visit

The Trust has a wide range of activities that will support you to feel better and make positive lifestyle choices and build the '5 Ways to Wellbeing' into your daily routine.

The '5 Ways to Wellbeing' looks at five things you can do to feel healthier and happier.

  • Connect – say hello to your neighbour, keep in touch with people
  • Be active – go out for a walk or a bike ride, do a yoga class or go for a swim
  • Take notice – stimulate your senses: listen to music or watch a film
  • Keep learning – try something new or rediscover an old interest
  • Give – hold the door open, smile and give compliments

Remember, there is plenty of help available if you are feeling stressed, anxious or panicky and talking to your GP is a good place to start.
