Lord Lieutenant and High Sheriff attend Young People Friendly awards

CCS 11105

Merseyside's Lord Lieutenant, Dame Lorna Muirhead DBE, and High Sheriff, Mr Ian Meadows OBE DL, joined Wirral Community NHS Trust to celebrate local community healthcare services and organisations achieving 'Young People Friendly' status. The Lord Lieutenant and the trust's Chief Executive, Simon Gilby, presented certificates at the awards ceremony held at West Kirby Residential School. Services and organisations who were awarded Young Person Friendly status include the trust's Speech and Language Service and Livewell Programme along with Forum Housing, Terrence Higgins Trust and Wirral Metropolitan College.

Wirral Community NHS Trust worked with around 1000 local young people to develop the Young People Friendly initiative, which is part of the Department of Health's national You're Welcome programme.

The trust has worked with a number of their own services and external organisations to help them achieve Young People Friendly status. To date they have helped 25 healthcare services and organisations to achieve the status and are currently supporting an additional 50 who hope achieve Young People Friendly during 2014.

Healthy Settings Programme Manager, Trish Barnes said: "The health of our young people is vital for them as individuals, and our communities. The Young People Friendly programme has been developed so they can access advice, support and treatment. It enables young people to live without worry, fear or concern".

The West Kirby Residential School team said: "Achieving the Young People Friendly status is something we are really proud of. We feel the accreditation underpins what we do".

The Forum Housing team said: "We get a lot of young people from across the Merseyside area that are vulnerable and in need of help. The teenage years are really important in the development of their behaviour. Young People Friendly status is another reason for them to come and use our services, and it will let them know that we are friendly, approachable and here to help which is really important".
