National Breastfeeding Awareness Week 25th - 30th June

A milk-trail, the Big Feed and a breastfeeding roadshow – just some of the events taking place in Wirral to celebrate National Breastfeeding Awareness Week 25th – 30th June.

Many women know "Breast is Best" but Wirral still has poor breastfeeding rates. Dozens of events are being held across Wirral next week to try and encourage more mums to give their child the best start in life.

Support and advice stalls are being held at several venues, a 'Big Feed' will take place at Pensby and Bebington Children's Centre's and all week long there will be fun and games at the health stall at Birkenhead Market. Then on Saturday 30th June between 10am – 3pm the Breastfeeding Roadshow will liven up St Werburgh's Square inBirkenhead, featuring a flashmob dance and Majorettes!

Breast milk is not the same as formula milk. It has unique properties that formula simply can't offer. A breastfed baby is healthier, protected from infections and diseases, less likely to die from cot death and less likely to have tummy upsets or develop diabetes.

And for mum, breastfeeding helps her to lose baby weight quicker, helps to protect against pre-menopausal breast cancer and saves more than £1000 per year!

Wirral Community NHS Trust has many incentives and resources to support new mums and help to try and change the way many communities feel about breastfeeding. It's launched a new smart phone "Breast Start" App and a scheme of local businesses happy to welcome breastfeeding mothers. There's also an incentive scheme giving gifts to reward new mothers for their breastfeeding achievements, while Health Visitors and Home Start Peer supporters provide home visits offering help and information.

To find out more about all the events taking place please visit www.wirralct.nhs.uk or download the Breast Start App at the Apple Store (I phones) or Google Play (Android phones).
