Top comedians encourage Wirral smokers to quit

  • Wirral Community NHS Trust & Wirral Council welcomes Stoptober 2014
  • Smokers five times more likely to quit if they can go 28 days without cigarettes
  • Campaign offers free support and advice to help smokers to quit

During October smokers in Wirral are being encouraged to join up and quit together for Stoptober 2014 – the National 28-day stop smoking challenge from Public Health England – using a range of free resources, advice and an element of Great British humour.

Now in its third year, the campaign follows a successful Stoptober 2013 campaign, where 1,492 smokers in Wirral signed up to quit smoking to improve their health, their families health and their finances. The Trust and the Council welcome the campaign and encourages smokers to get involved this year.

Smokers will get a range of free tools including a new stop smoking pack, a 28-day mobile phone app, text support with daily updates, quitting advice and tips for coping, as well as the encouragement and support from thousands of people quitting together through social media channels.

You can access local free stop smoking support from the Trust's Livewell Team. Research shows smokers are four times more likely to quit with the help of a trained NHS advisor. To sign up to Stoptober or for support to stop smoking call the team on 0151 630 8383, visit www.wirralct.nhs.uk, or search 'Stoptober' online.

Alongside support, top British comedians including the North West's Paddy McGuinness will bring a touch of the British sense of humour to help quitters through this challenge.

Cllr Chris Jones, Wirral's Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: "Stoptober is a great opportunity for the smokers across Wirral to quit together alongside friends, family and thousands of other people in our area.

"In Wirral 18.4% of residents currently smoke and I hope that the campaign will give them the encouragement and support they need to succeed in their 28-day quit attempt.

"Quitting is the single best thing you can do for your health and with the help of our local stop smoking service, the campaigns support, advice and humour I'm sure this year will be very successful."

Andrea Crossfield, Chief Executive of North West anti-tobacco social enterprise Tobacco Free Futures said: "I encourage every smoker in the Wirral area to quit for Stoptober 2014 and support those quitting around them throughout their 28-day challenge.

"After a successful Stoptober 2013, which saw 28,000 people in the North West sign up to quit, it would be great to see even more people pledging to quit this year. If you quit
smoking for 28 days then you are five times more likely to quit for good, improving your health and putting more money into your pocket.

"There has never been a better time to quit, with more free support than ever this year. This includes a new stop smoking pack, a 28-day mobile phone app, text support with daily updates, quitting advice and tips for coping, as well as the encouragement and support from thousands of people quitting together through Stoptober social media channels."
