Nutrition & Dietetics


The Nutrition and Dietetics Service provides expert advice about nutrition, how the body uses nutrients and the relationship between nutrition, health and disease.

 

We strive to maintain, improve or maximise the health of individuals, groups and families to treat illness and prevent nutrition related problems.

We provide nutritional interventions and support for a variety of needs:

  • Obesity
  • Undernutrition / unintentional weight loss
  • Swallowing problems resulting from a stroke, cancer, Parkinson’s disease or mental health problems eg dementia
  • Eating disorders
  • Diabetes and Impaired Glucose Regulation (pre-diabetes)
  • Heart disease
  • Food allergies
  • Gastroenterology
  • Kidney disease
  • Cancer
  • HIV/AIDS

 

Dietetic support includes individual dietary counseling, providing individual and group education, motivation techniques, working with support services to help with food provision, the use of prescription nutritional products to treat under nutrition and tube feeding.

We also act as a specialist resource for other health and social care professionals to promote best nutritional care.

 

Our children's service is part of the 0-19 Health and Wellbeing Service

 

Referrals


We accept referrals from GPs and all health or social care professionals using the the following referral forms:

Diabetes / IGR

 

 

Courses available

The Nutrition and Dietetics Service offers two courses to patients who have been diagnosed with either IGR or type 2 diabetes. (Patients can self refer or be referred by a GP/healthcare professional).

 

1. Impaired glucose regulation (IGR) (pre diabetes)

 

This is a half day course and takes place once a month at St Catherine's Health Centre and Victoria Central Health Centre alternately.

 

2. Wirral XPERT* Programme (for individuals with type 2 diabetes)

 

The course is a six week rolling diabetes education programme where individuals attend for 2.5 hours per week. It is held at a range of venues across Wirral with daytime and evening sessions available.

 

Both courses cover:

 

• introduction to IGR / Diabetes
• how to improve blood glucose control
• weight management
• healthy eating
• food labelling and carbohydrate awareness
• physical activity
• preventing health problems
